DEPA actively participated in the 18th Caspian International Oil & Gas Conference, the largest annual conference in the field of natural gas and energy in the Caspian region that was held in Baku, Azerbaijan, on 8 and 9 June 2011. The official opening ceremony was attended by the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, while among the participantpresent were theCommissioner for Energy in the European Commission Günter Oettinger, the Secretary of State’s Special Envoy for Energy Richard Morningstar, government agents from countries such as Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Norway, Russia, as well as representatives of international organizations and senior officials from energy companies.
The topics at the conference included developments in global energy markets; the role played by Azerbaijan in European energy security; the major interconnection projects in the wider area; as well as environmental protection issues. DEPA’s part in the conference involved the attendance and speech by the Chairman and CEO, Mr Sachinis. In his speech he analyzed the Southern Corridor’s importance for energy security and diversification of supply sources for Europe, the maturity of ITGI pipeline in order the future increased demand for natural gas to be met, and Greece’s contribution as an energy hub in the transportation of natural gas from the Caspian region to the countries of Southeastern Europe.
