Athens, Greece, 3rd February 2012: Gas deliveries to Greece have been affected during significant periods in the last month, a worrying situation as temperatures drop. In what recalls the 2009 events, gas supplies from Russia have seen a sharp drop which has affected several European countries as acknowledged this week by the European Commission.

Commenting on the disruptions, Harry Sachinis, Chairman of IGI Poseidon and Chairman and CEO of DEPA, the Public Gas Corporation of Greece said:

“The current shortages on gas deliveries are not happening for the first time. We are now facing disruptions in deliveries because of the weather conditions and the increase of demand in neighboring countries. The ITGI project would avoid these disruptions. Moreover, the ITGI project allows for what is known as Reverse Gas Flow – the possibility for reversing the flux of gas, thus allowing for gas from North Africa to flow to Italy and from there to South Eastern Europe”.

Greece is currently the only European country without a connection to the European grid, leaving it isolated and vulnerable to situations of disruption of supply. The opening of the Southern Corridor and specifically the ITGI project will guarantee security of supply and effective interconnection between European countries. ITGI will not only create conditions for increased energy security to Greece but also to its neighbors – namely Bulgaria and Romania – through IGB (Interconnector Greece-Bulgaria) with its construction expected to start before the end of the year.
