The issuance of Greece\u2019s first installation permit for a biomethane production plant under the new institutional framework marks a major milestone in the development of the country\u2019s renewable gas market.<\/p>\n
Athens, 15 October 2026. The forthcoming start of trial operations at Greece\u2019s first compressed biomethane production plant marks a significant step in the development of the domestic biomethane market. The plant is being developed by DEPA Commercial in partnership with CHITAS FARM at the latter\u2019s facilities in Filippiada. The biomethane produced will be used as a transport fuel (bio-CNG), expanding the supply of renewable fuels through DEPA Commercial\u2019s FISIKON refuelling network.<\/p>\n
This development follows the issuance of the country\u2019s first installation permit for a biomethane production plant, pursuant to Law 5215\/2025 and the Regulation on the Installation and Operation of Biomethane Production Plants, marking an important milestone in the implementation of the new institutional framework.<\/p>\n
The project involves upgrading biogas to high-purity biomethane, followed by compression and storage for use as a transport fuel (bio-CNG). This pilot project is of strategic importance to the domestic energy market, as it lays the foundations for harnessing a renewable energy source and integrating it into the existing energy infrastructure.<\/p>\n
The compressed biomethane produced will be available for distribution through DEPA Commercial\u2019s FISIKON refuelling stations, expanding the potential use of renewable fuels in transport, as it constitutes a renewable fuel with a zero-carbon footprint. This technology also enables compressed biomethane to be transported to consumers located beyond the reach of the natural gas grid, or injected into remote natural gas networks, broadening its potential applications.<\/p>\n
DEPA Commercial includes the developement of the biomethane as part of its broader strategy to diversify its energy portfolio and strengthen its presence in the renewable gas sector. The implementation of this project represents a substantive step towards deploying new energy solutions and developing a domestic biomethane market.<\/p>\n
Dr Kyriaki Karakitsou, Director of Subsidiary Operations at DEPA Commercial, stated: \u201cBiomethane development presents a significant opportunity to harness domestic energy resources and gradually expand the range of renewable fuels available in Greece. Through our company\u2019s pilot project in partnership with CHITAS FARM, we are investing in building expertise and evaluating solutions that can contribute to the energy transition while reducing dependence on imported energy sources. The technical and permitting experience gained to date during the development and implementation of the project, combined with the additional expertise to be acquired through the plant\u2019s trial and subsequent operations, provides a solid foundation for assessing new investment opportunities and exploring the potential for the wider use of biomethane in Greece. The granting of the Installation Permit marks a major milestone in our project\u2019s progress. We are moving directly to the next stage so that, following the successful completion of trial operations, we can apply for an Operating Permit, with the aim of completing the statutory permitting process and bringing the plant into full operation early next year.\u201d<\/p>\n
According to Mr Petros Panou, Director of Gas Mobility and Off-Grid CNG & ssLNG Customer Operations at DEPA Commercial, the forthcoming start of trial operations at the plant represents a significant step towards harnessing biomethane in Greece, demonstrating in practice its potential for production and distribution through existing infrastructure. Compressing biomethane into bio-CNG enables it to be transported and distributed through DEPA Commercial\u2019s FISIKON refuelling network, which comprises 34 stations nationwide and continues to expand.
