{"id":18740,"date":"2024-12-17T11:07:03","date_gmt":"2024-12-17T09:07:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.depa.gr\/?p=18740"},"modified":"2026-08-05T17:21:42","modified_gmt":"2026-08-05T14:21:42","slug":"i-papadopoulos-natural-gas-is-a-crucial-complement-to-renewable-energy-sources-on-the-path-to-decarbonisation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.depa.gr\/en\/i-papadopoulos-natural-gas-is-a-crucial-complement-to-renewable-energy-sources-on-the-path-to-decarbonisation\/","title":{"rendered":"I.Papadopoulos: &#8221; Natural gas is a crucial complement to renewable energy sources on the path to decarbonisation.&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Athens, 12 April 2024<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The President of DEPA Commerce, Mr. Ioannis Papadopoulos, discussed the crucial role of natural gas as a bridge fuel on the path to clean energy, as well as DEPA Commerce\u2019s strategic positioning in today\u2019s energy landscape, during his speech at the 9th Delphi Forum.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Papadopoulos emphasised that gas remains a crucial complement to renewable energy sources at this stage, adding that \u201cit will continue to play a significant role in the decarbonisation of the country\u2019s energy systems.\u201d He cited gas-fuelled power generation plants, such as the one under development with DEPA\u2019s participation, as examples of infrastructure that continue to bridge the gap created by the lignite phase-out process.<\/p>\n<p>In his remarks, Mr. Papadopoulos outlined DEPA Commerce&#8217;s strategic approach, which includes its involvement in major international infrastructure projects such as the IGB pipeline and the Alexandroupolis FSRU. These projects enhance the country\u2019s energy security and enhance Greece\u2019s role as an energy hub in the broader region.<\/p>\n<p>In this context, as Mr. Papadopoulos noted, DEPA demonstrates operational extroversion with a presence in many European and primarily Balkan countries, doubling its export volumes.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, as the Chairman of DEPA highlighted, the company is investing in clean energy in full alignment with national and European aspirations, fostering development opportunities grounded in sustainability. \u201cDEPA is systematically developing a green portfolio across the country, with a focus on transition regions such as Western Macedonia. This portfolio currently exceeds 700 MW in photovoltaic parks, with an immediate target of surpassing 1 GW. Many of these projects are at an advanced stage, having already secured the necessary connection licences with the National Transmission System (ESMIE),\u201d explained Mr. Papadopoulos.
