The EIB financing will cover 75% of the cost of new photovoltaic installations, with the total investment estimated at 521 million euro.<\/p>\n<p>These new solar parks will be built in Western Macedonia, Thessaly, and Central Greece. Once completed, the project will add approximately 800 MW of renewable energy to the national grid, equivalent to the energy consumption of 278,000 households for one year.<\/p>\n<p>The EIB supports new investments in cohesion regions where per capita income is below the EU average, demonstrating its commitment to equitable development and living standards convergence.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThis loan will support DEPA Commerce in its new plans. Congratulations to both sides for this agreement,\u201d<\/em> stated <strong>Kostis Hatzidakis, Minister of Finance<\/strong>, during the announcement.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe signing of this loan agreement between the European Investment Bank and DEPA Commerce marks the beginning of a significant investment in Greece, totaling over 500 million euro. The construction and operation of solar energy parks under this project will contribute approximately 800 MW of renewable energy to the country\u2019s grid. Such investments significantly enhance the penetration of renewable energy sources in Greece\u2019s energy mix, leading to reduced electricity costs for consumers, increased energy security, and, ultimately, greater energy independence for our country,\u201d<\/em> said <strong>Thodoros Skylakakis, Minister of Environment and Energy.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Accelerating energy investments is essential for enhancing grid reliability, unlocking the full potential of solar energy in Greece, and driving the nation\u2019s energy transition forward<\/em>\u201d noted <strong>Ioannis Tsakiris<\/strong>, Vice President of the EIB. \u201c<em>Europe&#8217;s green and sustainable future depends on projects like this. Solar parks of this kind will significantly advance the transition to increased reliance on renewable, sustainable energy.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>During a ceremony held in Athens on July 23, Mr. Tsakiris signed the loan agreements with DEPA Commerce CEO \u00a0\u00a0Mr. Konstantinos Xifaras and Chairman of the Board Mr. Ioannis Papadopoulos.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe agreement with the European Investment Bank brings the domestic energy market closer to a sustainable future. Additionally, this financing milestone strengthens our extensive efforts to transform DEPA Commerce into a fully integrated energy company that contributes to the country\u2019s sustainable development through targeted investments in new technologies and innovative solutions,\u201d<\/em> <strong>stated Ioannis Papadopoulos, Chairman of the Board of DEPA Commerce.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe loan agreement with the EIB is a milestone for DEPA regarding the implementation of our renewable energy plans, aligned with Greece&#8217;s green transition objectives. This funding supports our strategic plan to promote solar energy projects developed over the past years. We focus on sustainability, energy security, and contributing to Greece\u2019s energy transition while advancing Europe\u2019s climate goals,\u201d<\/em> said <strong>Konstantinos Xifaras, CEO of DEPA Commerce.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Accelerating the use of renewable energy across Greece and the EU<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>These financing agreements are another part of the EIB&#8217;s dedicated support package under the RepowerEU initiative, a multi-billion-euro EU plan aimed at reducing dependency on fossil fuel imports, accelerating the green transition, and helping member states achieve climate neutrality by 2050.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Leveraging EIB Support for Energy Investments in Greece<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Since 1964, the EIB has supported long-term energy investments in Greece in partnership with organizations like the Public Power Corporation (PPC), the Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network Operator (HEDNO), the Independent Power Transmission Operator (IPTO) and Metlen.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past decade, the bank has provided over 4.3 billion euro in funding for energy investments in Greece, including major improvements in connecting Greek islands to the mainland grid, renewable energy expansion, and enhancing energy efficiency.<\/p>\n<p><strong>About the EIB<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The European Investment Bank (EIB), owned by the member states of the European Union, serves as the EU&#8217;s long-term financing institution. It funds strategic investments that align with the EU&#8217;s policy objectives, fostering competitiveness, innovation, sustainable development, and a just and accelerated transition to climate neutrality.<\/p>\n<p>According to the European Investment Bank Group (EIB Group), which comprises the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the European Investment Fund (EIF), the total amount of financing agreements signed in Greece in 2023 was 2.5 billion euro, of which 33% was allocated to support sustainable energy and natural resources projects.
